SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Two detainees received minor injuries during an incident at the Regional Youth Detention Center Monday afternoon, according to the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).

The disturbance started around 2:30 p.m. resulting in a lockdown of the facility.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS), a juvenile stole one of the guard’s keys and released other detainees into the facility. Officers were also alerted that there could be a juvenile that had potentially been stabbed, meaning they could be armed, officials said.

Troopers arrived on the scene with K-9s who led the way into the facility.

Although several inmates refused to follow commands to get on the ground, DPS said the teens complied once K-9s were introduced.

Officers then came into contact with the detainee who had been “stabbed in the back.” The DJJ called it “a shallow puncture wound.”

Meanwhile, the other juvenile was diagnosed with a chest contusion.

According to the DPS, police entered the facility at 2:47 p.m. and had the building secured by 3:45 p.m.

The incident is under review by the DJJ Office of Investigation.
