Police arrest suspect in West Savannah murder

Police have arrested a man for the murder of an 82-year-old man who had recently been reported missing.

According to the Savannah Police Department (SPD), William “Billy” Long was killed on Sunday, Oct. 14.

Long had recently been reported missing, and on Sunday around 9:15 a.m., officers received a report that his vehicle was located on Elliott Avenue.

SPD says Tony Locklear, 56, was located near the vehicle. He was taken in for questioning.

During the investigation, SPD’s Violent Crimes detectives discovered a body near E. Lathrop Avenue and Bay Street. The body was positively identified as Long. His body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.

Locklear was charged with murder and is being held at the Chatham County Detention Center.

The investigation into Long’s death continues.
