South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a multi-agency police pursuit that resulted in the death of one person.

According to the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), a deputy responded Wednesday evening to an assistance call from the Town of Gifford Police Department.

HCSO says that the officer was engaged in a vehicle pursuit that had initially been involved with the Town of Estill Police Department.

The pursuit ended in a crash in front Gate Station Convenience Store on Highway 278 (610 Elm St. W.) in Hampton. HCSO says the suspect’s vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle.

Deangelo Lashon Brown, 21, of Estill, was taken into custody by the Gifford Police Department on a Failure to Stop for a Blue Light Charge.

HCSO says Brown’s passenger later died at Hampton Regional Medical Center. The passenger has not been identified at this time.

The sheriff’s office said the deputy responding to the pursuit was subsequently involved in a collision at the intersection of Elm St. West and Shaw Drive.

The incident is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
