Crime & Safety

The man who was shot during a bold, daytime armed robbery in Chatham County is being identified as a soldier.

Tracy Bailey with the Public Affairs Office for the 75th Ranger Battalion at Fort Benning confirms the victim is a soldier. Further information is not being released, including an update on his condition or his name.

The soldier was taken to a Savannah area hospital with serious injuries. The day after the shooting, police reported the victim was in stable condition and was expected to survive.

It started Sunday, March 24 in Berwick, when two men entered Brewer’s Sports Bar & Grill through a back door just after noon.

The men demanded money. A witness who does not want to be identified says there were about six people in the bar at the time of the robbery but did not share exactly what happened in the moments before the shooting.

The violent crime prompted the management of Brewer’s to close from the day of the crime through March 29.

An unidentified woman explains why in a message left on the answering machine: “We were the victims of aggressive violence  regarding gun violence last Sunday on the 24th. Our staff is trying to recuperate and we hope that the support of the surrounding business areas will help us get past this awful time.”

Detectives are still searching for the suspects described as two black males, wearing all black, with black hoodies and purple bandanas.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Chatham County Police Department Tip Line at 912-650-6161 or Crime Stoppers at 912-234-2020.
