BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WSAV) – An 18-year-old father is behind bars in the Lowcountry after his baby suffered serious burns in the bathtub.

Jeril Simmons was arrested this week for a January 29 incident where his child was found in scalding hot water in the bathtub.

In the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report, investigators say Simmons told them he put the baby on the couch in the living room and he went into the bedroom and went to sleep.

He told investigators he woke up when a phone call came in after midnight, and only then did he hear the baby crying.

Simmons said he is a very hard sleeper. So hard of a sleeper that someone could “break into the house and he would be unaware of the intrusion.”

He says he found the baby standing in the water in the bathtub. He grabbed the child and called 911.

First responders said the burns were so bad that “skin was falling off.”

Simmons now faces charges of inflicting great bodily injury to a child.
