ATLANTA (WXIA) — A 22-year-old has been arrested after an infant was killed in Atlanta Monday afternoon.
The 6-month-old victim, Grayson Fleming, was fatally shot near a convenience store in the Anderson Park area just before 3 p.m. Monday.
Grayson’s mother reportedly said she was driving in the area when she came upon a gunfight between people in two cars. She said a bullet traveled into the back of her car and hit the baby.
News outlets report Grayson was pronounced dead at an Atlanta area hospital.
Roughly 24 hours after the fatal shooting, a suspect was taken into custody. Atlanta’s police chief said the 22-year-old was apprehended in Decatur.
Chief Rodney Bryant said more arrests could be forthcoming.
“We’re confident that we have the shooter and we’re looking to gather more individuals that were involved,” said Bryant.
The city’s new mayor, Andre Dickens, said he grew up not far from where the shooting happened and still lives in the area today.
“We had to talk to a family right after this incident occurred,” said Mayor Dickens. “They were bystanders and had nothing to do with this — innocent.”
He added: “We will not stop until we stop this gun violence.”
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis commended the department for their quick arrest, saying she was “disgusted” that the shooting happened.
She said her office is working with the police department on this case.
