A woman found dead on Hilton Head Tuesday appears to have died from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the coroner.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) says Jennifer Rudemyer, 39 of Bluffton, was found dead at the scene of a shooting in the Spanish Wells Plantation around 6:15 p.m.
There, BCSO also located 60-year-old Gaston Perez, who was shot several times outside of his Widewater Road home.
Officials say the manner of Rudemyer’s death was consistent with suicide. But a final autopsy report is pending.
Family members say Perez is in stable condition at Memorial Health in Savannah.
“A handgun was found at the scene and it is believed that the only two parties involved in the shooting were the woman and the man,” BCSO said in a statement.
News 3 has learned Perez and Rudemyer were a long-time couple with a history of domestic issues. BCSO says deputies had been called to the home on multiple occasions and that Perez had a restraining order against her.
Rudemyer was known for her business, Coastal Clutter Queen, which specializes in professional organizational solutions. Perez is a family medicine doctor in Bluffton who is affiliated with multiple area hospitals.
BCSO is still investigating. Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue also responded on Tuesday.
