SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Savannah Police Department (SPD) took a man into custody after they say he barricaded himself inside a home on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Police said they responded to a trespassing call at 6:45 a.m. Monday and located an armed suspect inside a home in the Savannah Gardens apartment complex.

He broke into a relative’s apartment, barricaded himself inside, and stayed there for several hours, SPD said. Police say there wasn’t any forced entry, but the man wasn’t welcome at the residence.

WSAV is told the man was experiencing a mental health crisis. Behavioral health hostage negotiators were able to talk the man down and he was arrested shortly after.

He was taken to Memorial Health for evaluation.

Assistant Police Chief Robert Gavin says everyone is safe and no one was injured.

SPD says the incident is contained to the block and there is no threat to the public.
