A report of a suspicious struck involved in a burglary started a chain reaction of events Tuesday afternoon that ended with a law enforcement officer losing his leg and being seriously injured.
Deputies in Dade County were notified that a chase involving two burglary suspects and several agencies was making its way across state lines into Georgia.
Dade County Sheriff’s Office Major Tommy Bradford was in the process of deploying a spike strip when he was run over by the suspects.
He was flown from the scene to a hospital. Bradford lost his leg as a result and remains in critical condition.
According to the Dade County Sheriff’s Office, there was only one suspect in the pickup truck, Laura Leann Wooten, 35. She was stopped at the Dade County Courthouse Square after striking Bradford.
Wooten was taken into custody at the Walker County jail. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.
A blood drive for Bradford is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. According to the sheriff’s office, the Major has already had surgery and will have many more to come.
The sheriff’s office released the following statement Tuesday on Facebook:
Thank you so much for all the calls, messages, Facebook post, and prayers.
Our Major selflessly put his life on the line to try to stop the vehicle, who was traveling in excess of 90mph, from making it to downtown Trenton, and potentially harming an innocent bystander.
Please continue to pray for him, his family, and our department.
