EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) — The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) is investigating a deadly motorcycle crash that claimed the life of an Ellabell man Thursday night.

According to officials, the motorcyclist, James Martin, 58, was attempting to pass a semi-truck traveling west on Highway 80 near Meldrim Road when he struck a car head-on traveling east. Martin died at the scene. Martin’s wife, who was riding a separate motorcycle, also crashed due to the debris from the initial impact and was transported to a local area hospital with possible serious injuries.

The driver of the car was transported for treatment, while two other passengers complained of minor injuries. The semi-truck driver was uninjured.

Meldrim Road to Highway 17 South was closed for several hours as officials investigated the scene. The roads reopened just before 2 a.m. Friday morning.

The crash remains under investigation by the ECSO Traffic Unit.
