Chatham County has the third most convicted sex offenders registered in Georgia, according to the state sex offender registry. There are 576 listings in Chatham, a county with a population of about 290,000. Fulton County, in Atlanta with a population of more than one million, ranks first with 1,461 sex offenders registered. Coming in second, Dekalb County, with a population of more than 750,000 tallied in 1,020 registered sex offenders.
There are more populated counties in Georgia than Chatham that do not have as many registered sex offenders. But according to the Interim Executive Director of the Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire, the ranking is not necessarily a bad indicator, “I know we have a consistency in our reporting of people committing the crime. I think more people are caught and are being punished, which we’re excited about. So having that registry keeps everyone on their toes.”
The Georgia Sex Offender Registry allows you to locate convicted sex offenders up to three miles of an address. If you choose, it will send you breaking email alerts when someone convicted of a Georgia sex crime moves into that address zone. https://gbi.georgia.gov/georgia-sex-offender-registry
For free mobile access to the registry, download the Department of Justice app called the National Sex Offender Public Website App. You will see names, addresses and pictures of convicted offenders within a 1-mile radius of your location.
