BURTON, S.C. (WSAV) — Human remains found in a burned car in Burton over the weekend have been identified as a man who went missing back in July.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) confirmed the remains found in a wooded area off Ramsey Road on Aug 5. were those of 49-year-old Clifford Lamont Jenkins. Jenkins was reported missing on July 17 after being last seen leaving his Grays Hill home in a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze.

BCSO matched DNA obtained from the scene with DNA collected from Jenkin’s personal items to positively identify him.

Investigators are unable to confirm that the burned car Jenkins was found in is the car he was last seen driving due to fire damage, but the body style of the car and a matching Chevrolet emblem found at the scene leads them to believe it is the same car.

The Sheriff’s Office has ruled the death a homicide.

Anyone with information related to the burned vehicle or any recent suspicious activity in the Ramsey Road and Ramblin Road area of Burton is encouraged to call Sgt. J. Snider at 843-255-3421 or if wishing to remain anonymous and for a possible reward, Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111.
