A 19-year-old is in custody after a barricade incident at a Brunswick lodge Thursday afternoon.

According to the Glynn County Police Department, officers responded to Oglethorpe Plaza Efficiencies on Darien Highway in reference to a young man swinging a broomstick and threatening people.

Police say the 19-year-old has mental health issues.

Officers were able to make contact with the man who then threatened officers and fled on foot.

He barricaded himself inside a utility room in the complex.

The department’s Crisis Intervention Team responded to the lodge to get the man to surrender.

After about two hours without success, S.W.A.T. Team members made entry and took the male into custody without incident.

He was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“I am extremely pleased with the way all of our law enforcement and emergency medical
personnel handled this situation”, said Glynn County Police Chief John Powell. “I am proud
to know that we have officers trained to handle situations involving people in crisis without
using force.”
