WOODBINE, Ga. (WSAV) – One person was killed and another was injured as deputies were serving a search warrant in Camden County Tuesday morning.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the Camden County Sheriff’s Office arrived at a home in the 12000 block of U.S. Highway 17 around 5 a.m.
The GBI says law enforcement knocked on the door before making entry. In body camera footage released Thursday, a deputy shouts: “Sheriff’s office. Search warrant. Come to the door.” A knock and three seconds later, the deputies enter the home.
A few more seconds pass before deputies yell, “get on the ground,” followed by about a dozen gunshots. The GBI says it was “an exchange of gunfire between the occupants of the residence.”
Latoya James, 37, was shot and died at the scene. Varshawn Brown, 46, was injured and taken to a hospital, officials say.
First Coast News spoke with the victim’s mother, who said James and Brown are cousins. She said James was visiting Brown at his home on Highway 17 when the shooting occurred.
“I’m always scared for my babies,” said Betty James, the victim’s mother. “I’m always scared for my babies because of the color of their skin. And my fear finally came.”
Family members said Brown was hospitalized with at least four gunshot wounds.
The sheriff’s office requested the GBI to conduct an independent investigation. Once completed, the agency will turn over their findings to the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
