SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Firefighters and volunteers hit the golf course in Savannah Monday to have some fun for a great cause.
The Savannah Professional Firefighters Association hosted its 7th Annual Great Balls of Fire Charity Tournament to raise money for the St. Joseph’s Candler Telfair Mammography Fund.
More than 150 local firefighters showed off their skills to raise money for potentially life-saving screenings and treatments.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women, but many people cannot afford to pay for the diagnosis through treatment.
The union’s president says it’s a disease that affects many families in their tight-knit community.
“We go to work every third day and then the situations that we encounter are not the best, so this is a way for our members to not only let loose, have some fun, but interact with the community too and build the relationship,” said Johnny Hinton, Savannah Professional Firefighters Association.
The association has donated more than $30,000 over the past six years — and they hope this year will add to that success.
