Empty Stocking Fund: How to help Bryan County kids this Christmas

Community

For almost 20 years the Bryan County Children’s Fund has held it’s Empty Stocking program to give Christmas gifts to those in need.

The director of Bryan County Family Connection, Wendy Sims, said the program has grown from gifting around 60 children in the beginning to now gifting over 600 children in Bryan County.

Sims said this season there’s been an increase in applications of older kids being sent in. However, there has not been an increase in sponsors picking the older ones.

“The older children sometimes this is the only time they get a new jacket, or a new outfit or new shoes new underwear. And we really try to make sure they are taken care of,” Sims explained.

Sims said if the older kids do not end up with a sponsor, the organization helps out with a gift. Some of the money used to help out with a gift comes from donations from the Good Ole’ Boys, in Bryan County.

This year, Bryan County resident Paige Glazer wanted to help the Stocking Fund raise more money,  and make sure the older children had some kind of wish fulfilled this Christmas. So she created a GoFundMe page.

The goal is to match what the Good Ole’ Boys donated, which was over $19,000.

“These kids can slide by the wayside and hopefully we can help, you know, have a little more of a merry time than just the necessities,” Glazer said.

Although there is a GoFundMe page to raise more money to help buy gifts, Sims said they are still looking for sponsors to help.

A simple gift could make a difference.
