Savannah Police holding annual memorial ceremony to honor fallen officers

Savannah Police Department will hold its annual Police Memorial Ceremony on Wednesday to honor local law enforcement who have died in the line of duty.

The ceremony will come one day after Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Each year, families have the chance to place a rose at the base of the Police Memorial Monument. The monument reads, "Above and Beyond Lest We Forget."

Since 1968, 54 officers from the Savannah area have died in the line of duty. The latest was Patrick Carothers, Deputy U.S. Marshal, who was shot and killed in 2016.

The special ceremony will pay tribute to Carothers and the 53 other officers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our community.
