A Mount Pleasant family is grieving the loss of their 18-year-old daughter and sister after she dies suddenly while away at school in the up state.

Clemson freshman Virginia Gilliam died on August 24 after what started out as a urinary tract infection.

"Anybody that knew Virginia, knew she saw the world through a child's eyes. Again, I knew that, my family knew that and I'm not a big social media guy but since then I've just been seeing all this out pouring," Herb Gilliam.

Social Media he says has been overwhelming and their home has been filled with people coming by to give their condolences.

Although she is described by her family as a wall-flower and very shy person, the community support shows that she touched the hearts of many.

Virginia went to Wando High School, and was on the school chorus, she was on the Hobcaw swim team for 13 years and enjoyed participating in her youth ministry group at the Church at LifePark in Mount Pleasant.

Tragedy is inevitable and it's something that you can't predict it. You can't understand it," older sister Sarah Katherine said.

Her sister had just moved into her dorm room at Clemson two weeks ago. This past Thursday she felt sick and by Sunday morning she had passed.

"She went into septic shock," say her parents.

Though they are heart broken they are speaking out to honor their daughter.

"It's just this pain in our hearts that just will probably never be healed," said Herb Gilliam.

The family says it is their faith that keeps them from expressing and feeling anger.

"Our family would not be able to sit here together if we did not have that and we didn't we didn't have such a strong family bond. And we didn't have faith in our savior," said Sarah Katherine.
