Vols make strides in first scrimmage

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Saturday night, the Tennessee football team had a golden opportunity to impress its coach, and the Vols didn't disappoint.

Coach Butch Jones was aggravated with his team's youthful mistakes and inconsistency most of the week, but it seems something finally clicked.

No one outside the team was allowed at the scrimmage, but the players and coaches claim it was an early success for the inexperienced squad.

"On one side, you're excited about it because the defense didn't give them up, but we need more big plays," said Coach Jones. "What our young players are finding is that you're creating habits, and you're creating habits in your practice habits."

Senior Quarterback Justin Worley added, "We converted on a one minute situation, did some good things in some situational football style. I'm excited with where we're at and the progression that we'll make."

The Vols' reward was Sunday off, but practice continues at 9:00 AM Monday.
