Ft. Stewart Soldier Killed in Traffic Accident

The Fort Stewart Public Affairs office confirms that a Fort Stewart Soldier was killed early Thursday morning in a car accident in Tattnall County.

36-year-old Staff Sgt. Joseph L. Cunningham, was killed in the head-on collision on Highway 196 near Glennville around 1 a.m. He had just arrived from Fort Riley, Kan., and was to be a member of the 3rd Infantry Division Band.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the two-car crash that also claimed two additional lives.

An Army band member by training, Staff Sgt. Cunningham had served more than 17 years. He had two deployments to Afghanistan with previous units, most recently returning in January 2007
