Cloudland motivated by late season collapse

ROAN MOUNTAIN, Tenn. -- As far as needing a little motivation, the Cloudland football team has it in bunches.

The Highlanders entered the final week of the regular season undefeated and with a shot at a region title last year. Two games and eleven turnovers later, their season was finished at 9-2 with losses to Hampton and, in the playoffs, to Midway.

Cloudland has plenty of firepower returning in 2014, and they're ready to put the past where it belongs.

"We had seven turnovers against Midway and four against Hampton. That's eleven combined turnovers, you know, and the biggest thing that Coach Pittman's been stressing to us is not to turn the ball over," said senior Wide Receiver Zac Benfield. "We let that motivate us because you can either let it beat you down, getting beat by Hampton, or you can let it motivate you, and so we're trying to let it motivate us."

"It motivates us for this year," added junior Quarterback Austin Whitehead. "We know how to prepare now. We're going to be focused every week going in, and we're just going to try to be more focused and play better, be more mature."

One thing you'll notice about this year's team is the super hero connection. A number of players got super hero cleats for this season, and there's a little bit of a fun message behind them for the guys on the field.

"We've got guys that are kinda trying to be super heroes on the field, and they're kind of bringing it with them to practice," said Head Coach Brock Pittman. "I think it's good for the team, and again, we're laid back. If you play at Cloudland, you're going to have fun, so you can't forget that football is fun."

The Highlanders start their season in less than three weeks. They close with Hampton once again in what could be another region title game.
