Longer session tests Tillis, US Senate race

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - U.S. Senate candidate Thom Tillis had hoped this year's North Carolina legislative session would be over by now. But the budget is over three weeks late and hopes of a July 4 end date are a distant memory.

The lingering session means Tillis has had to split his time between negotiating in Raleigh as House speaker while running for the Senate. Tillis had a fundraiser scheduled Wednesday in Washington, D.C.

The longer the session lasts, the less time Tillis has to close a fundraising gap with Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan. Tillis' campaign manager says he'd prefer the session be over but is confident they'll have the resources to win.

Hagan's campaign blames Tillis for a long session because of decisions last year to lower taxes that disproportionately help the wealthy.
