Ridgeland Veteran Celebrates Birthdays, Anniversary, 30 Years of Service

Posted: Updated:
Ridgeland, SC - A Ridgeland couple has plenty of reasons to celebrate tonight. A week of festivities follows retired army Sgt. Maj. Ernest N. Colden and his wife, Catherine. The veteran who served his country for 30 years turned 90 years old recently, and his wife is 88 years old today. They're also celebrating 61 years of marriage.

Catherine Colden remembers the day she fell for her husband, years ago. "He sang a song I liked. A beautiful song," she says. Her family approved. "They think I did a beautiful job, tying him up."

"It's a funny thing. We weren't interested in each other, no. She wasn't interested in me, and I wasn't interested in her. 'Cause she said soldiers just tell lies, you know. Sometimes we have to take the truth and put it on a different shelf, you know," Sgt. Maj. Ernest N. Colden says. He still wears his dress blues for special occasions. He's been recognized for his service by Governor Haley and even President Obama. He says his ego swells each time he suits up.

"I can tell you a story, this uniform was purchased in 1967, and I can still wear it," he says.

"Oh I love those dress blues because it brings back memories, you know. I love them," Catherine Colden says.
