WHISPERING PINES, N.C. -

A Moore County girl has a new place to play thanks to Make-A-Wish of Central North Carolina.

Evie Wentz, 10, underwent a transplant in February after her kidneys failed. Before her surgery, she met with Make-A-Wish and told them her dream of having a tree house.

Construction crews and volunteers have been working on the dream home and on Saturday the girl was able to see her dream up close.

"It's been really exciting and I never thought it would look like this but it's actually really awesome and I am really thankful to all the people that helped build it," said Evie Wentz.

The tree house comes after months of planning and hard work from volunteers and a long road of health problems for the young girl.

A rare syndrome caused multiple problems that required a blood transfusion and causing Evie Wentz's kidneys to fail.

"This whole experience has been quite a journey," said Evie Wentz’s dad Tyler. "She's far better off than she was a ways back and she's getting more healthy and stronger all the time."

Tyler Wentz said he plans to pay the gift his daughter was given forward by raising money through Make-A-Wish to help other kids like his daughter.

"They have what they call a ‘Trial Blaze Challenge’ and I'll be hiking 28.3 miles in one day in October," he said. "I'm trying to do what I can to give back."

The massive tree house was built in memory of 20-year-old Remy Cox who was killed in a car accident last year. Evie Wentz has his picture on a shelf inside. His mother wanted to give back and do it in his honor to the foundation.

Evie Wentz's dad said the next step for his family is to enjoy the time they have together.

The process inspired the Wentz family to encourage people to become frequent blood donators.

"At one point, Evie needed 30 units of blood," he said. "We started something called Evie's four gallon challenge to motivate people to donate."

Make-A-Wish of Central North Carolina represents 51 counties in the state. The group plans to grant 241 wishes this year.
