NC 12, Bonner Bridge reopens for residents, essential personnel

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Bonner Bridge and North Carolina Highway 12 has reopened to permanent residents and personnel of critical business, the North Carolina Department of Transportation announced.

Permanent residents of Hatteras Island will need to show a driver’s license with a Hatteras Island address to gain access to the island, NCDOT said.

Officials did not say when visitors will be able to return to the Outer Banks.

NCDOT said crews worked Friday and overnight to ensure the safety of the routes.

I want to thank our entire team for their service and hard work on the July 4th national holiday to get N.C. 12 and the Bonner Bridge reopened so quickly after the storm," said NCDOT Secretary Tony Tata. "Safety is always our first priority, but we also know how important it is to get our Hatteras Island residents back home, and our beach tourism back on line."

Hurricane Arthur left Highway 12 unusable due to sand, water and downed power lines, NCDOT said.

Officials ask motorists using Highway 12 and Bonner Bridge to remain cautious.
