Missing swimmer found in Tar River identified

Posted: Updated:
FALKLAND, NC - A missing swimmer's body was found just before 11 o'clock Saturday morning off the Fish and Wildlife Dock off of Highway NC 222.

A dive team pulled the body of Kenneth Skaggs, 51, of New Bern, out of the Tar River. The Falkland Fire Department along with the Sydney Dive Team and Hertford County Emergency Management pulled the Tar River since 6 a.m. Saturday.

Falkland Fire Department and the Pitt County Sheriff's Office responded to a missing swimmer call Friday.  Falkland Fire Chief William Proctor says the swimmer went missing Friday, around 4:30 p.m. at the boating ramp at the Pitt County Wild Life Club at Highway 222 and Highway 43.

Chief Proctor says teams searched for the swimmer until 9:30 Friday evening, and continued their search Saturday.

"We went back out this morning at 5:30.  Maybe 6:00a.m. to 6:15a.m. we were  still were searching for him; then after that we had the Sydney Fire Department and some other fire departments come in and we just went into recovery mode," said Proctor.

Skaggs' family friend, Paul Puckett, says he was grilling out when he found out the 51-year-old was missing.

"It just didn't come to our thought with so many people around that he had drowned. There was no distress, no needing help, no splashing water, like I said  just like that he was gone," said Puckett.

Puckett says for awhile everyone thought Skaggs may have gotten out of the water and went to his daughter's home nearby. The family says they got concerned and called 911 when they checked the house and he wasn't there.

Family and friends say they are going to miss the smile of the man they call " Cowboy."

Skaggs is orginally from Kinston, but was living in New Bern.
