Two teens arrested in Carter County death investigation

The two teenagers charged with killing a Carter County man Friday, were arraigned in Carter County Sessions Court Monday.

Anthony Lacey, 18, and Demetrice Cordell, 19, both of Roan Mountain, were scheduled to appear in Sessions Court again on Sept. 9.

Two teenagers are in jail and according to deputies they're accused of killing a Carter County man.

Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes said deputies responded to a home off Heaton Creek Road around 11:00 a.m. Friday. Deputies said when they arrived they found Danny Vance, 56, dead on his front porch. According to officers, it appeared Vance had been beaten and murdered, then burglarized and robbed.

Deputies said their investigation led them to a house on Hampton Creek. Investigators said a manhunt ensued and deputies were led through a wooded area near Townsend Road where two men were arrested.

Mathes told News Channel 11 Anthony Lacey, 18, and Demetrice Cordell, 19, both of Roan Mountain are currently in jail.

Lacey and Cordell were both charged with first-degree murder, theft of property over $500, theft of property over $1,000, evading arrest and aggravated robbery. More charges are reportedly pending.

Both men are each being held on $210,000 bond.

Investigators said additional charges are pending against the pair and more information will be released soon.

Investigators say a man is dead from a gunshot wound on Roan Mountain in Carter County.

At this point investigators don't know much about exactly what happened, but they say they are investigating it as a homicide.

Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes said this morning on the 600 block of Heaton Creek Road family members arrived for a visit and found their relative dead at his home.

“We will be sending the body for an autopsy,” Mathes said. “There does appear that there was a struggle.”

Mathes said this could be linked to some other crimes that happened last night including a stolen vehicle and a break in.

He is asking anyone with any information to call the sheriff's office at (423) 543-2211.
