A fire at the Great Dane plant in Statesboro Thursday afternoon temporarily disrupted work. Firefighters responded to flames and heavy smoke on Gateway Pond House Drive.

Great Dane Marketing Director David Grant said the fire began in one of the cooling units outside of the building. From there the flames spread to more units and eventually to the building's exterior wall. It took firefighters around 30 minutes to extinguish the flames.

Grant said around 200 employees were evacuated safely.

"We go to great lengths to make our operation as safe as possible but unfortunately things like this do happen from time to time. I think the most important thing is that the fire was identified, people were safely evacuated, and the damage was kept to a minimum,” said Grant.

The Great Dane plant in Statesboro will close for the July 4th holiday but will be up and running on Monday.
