Dealing with Traffic Headaches in Pooler

Posted: Updated:
POOLER, GA -

It's a problem going from bad to worse, with new business moving in, traffic congestion is expected to increase in the Pooler area. However officials say there is a reason traffic is going to get much worse, the new Outlet Mall of Georgia is going to open next year, right along the Pooler Parkway; but city officials say they have a plan.

"Before this latest round of development the city of Pooler had already been working with the State Department of Transportation to address these issues. And given the new Outlet Mall of Georgia, growth has come up a lot faster than anticipated,” says Karen Robertson with the Pooler Chamber of Commerce.

There are also several projects underway to clear up gridlock. The Savannah-Hilton Head International airport is designing and funding a new turn lane for traffic to entering I-95 south and they're extending the left turn lane headed north bound, to accommodate more traffic waiting to enter the interstate. The airport is also adding two new north bound exit lanes.

Additionally, the Georgia Department of Transportation plans to extend those new turn lanes. GDOT also says they plan to widen Gulfstream Road between Highway 21 and Robert Miller Drive and add two new round abouts to keep traffic moving.

However GDOT says they had hoped those projects would be finished in time for the mall's opening next year, but now they say they won't be ready until the following year 2016.
