GA Slow Poke Law Goes into Effect

Posted: Updated:

Georgia law enforcement officials will begin enforcing the state's new "Slow Poke" Law this Tuesday.

The law requires drivers in the left lane of a four lane Georgia highway or interstate to merge to the right lane when faster traffic approaches from behind. This law is intended to reduce traffic congestion and cut down on confrontations and road rage as well.

However, there are several exceptions for which drivers can stay in the left lane, says the Effingham County Sheriff's Office. Law enforcement will give drivers in the left lane a pass when the following instances occur:

*When traffic conditions or congestion make it necessary to drive in the passing lane,

*During inclement weather when obstructions or other hazards make it necessary to drive in the passing lane

*When compliance with a law of this state or with an official traffic control device makes it necessary to drive in the passing lane.

*If a vehicle must be driven in the passing lane to exit or turn left.

*On toll highways, when it is necessary to pay a toll or use a pass.

*For authorized emergency vehicle(s) engaged in official duties.

*For vehicle(s) engaged in highway maintenance and construction operations.

Otherwise, law enforcement will ticket drivers who will then face a misdemeanor.
