Rain forecast? Put a lid on garbage.

Posted: Updated:
We know the summer thunderstorms roll into Tampa Bay almost every day. The City of Oldsmar wants to remind you to keep a lid on your garbage can.

Rain water that runs through garbage in a can can lead to storm water pollution. The water that leaks from the garbage flows into storm drains and directly into our waterways.

Estavan Baza, a sustainability coordinator at the city of Oldsmar, says allowing the garbage to get wet can also impact the waste-to-energy operations.

Finally, wet garbage can cost us all more money. Garbage facilities charge the municipalities a tipping fee for the weight each truck brings to the plant. Wet garbage weighs more than garbage that is dry.

"The more garbage weighs, the more we're going to get charged for it," said Baza.

Ultimately, that tipping fee will be passed on to residents. Baza has a simple reminder especially during the summer rainy season - put a lid on it.
