Frantic 911 call released in UNC student's death

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

In a frantic 911 call released Wednesday, a UNC student who died last week may have been beyond help when his body was discovered.

Chapel Hill Police released the 911 call in the death of 21-year-old Harris Pharr, a biomedical student at UNC and a Chi Phi fraternity leader. Pharr was found dead in his apartment on June 19 from what his father said was likely cardiac arrest.

During the call, a woman frantically asked the operator for help.

"Oh my God, help me. I think he's dead," the woman exclaimed. She later said, "He's not moving."

The female caller eventually handed the phone to a man with Pharr at the request of the 911 operator. The 911 operator then asked the man, "Do you think he's beyond any help or do you think we can try to give him CPR?"

The man replied, "I do not."

When the 911 operator asked if Pharr was cold to the touch, the man replied, "Yes."

Police have said that no foul play is suspected in Pharr's death, but they are waiting on the medical examiner's report before releasing further details. His father, John Pharr, said Tuesday that the medical examiner said the cause of death was likely cardiac arrest.

John Pharr said it was possibly due to stress from on-going studies.

Pharr grew up in Raleigh and was a Broughton High School graduate, avid swimmer and described as hard-working and gifted.

His death marked the second death in 2 years for the Chi Phi fraternity, a well-known organization located just on the edge of campus. Freshman David Shannon, of Charlotte, died in October 2012 after falling about 40 feet off of a structure in Carrboro.

Chi Phi was suspended in November 2013 for "alleged risk management violations including alcohol violations and inappropriate New Member activities."
