New Georgia gun law causing changes at City Services Center

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

City officials are planing to make some changes to the Columbus City Services Center because of the recently passed gun bill in Georgia.

House Bill 60 allows concealed carry weapons inside a government building unless there is security screening at the entrance. In an effort to keep guns out of the City Services Center, the city will screen citizens at the entrance on the parking deck side. The other entrance will be closed indefinitely.

There is currently security screening at the entrance of Council Chambers at the City Services Center, but the bill says the security checkpoint must be at the entrance of the building in order for the building to disallow concealed carry weapons.

Deputy City Manager Lisa Goodwin tells News 3 citizens visiting the City Services Center will have to go through a screening process similar to what they go through at the government center.

Signs have already gone up at the City Services Center alerting people of the changes. The changes must be made before July 1st when the bill goes into effect.

More details about the changes will be presented to Council at Tuesday’s Columbus City Council meeting.

It's no secret that alligators sometimes make their way into pools here in Florida. But, in sunny California, bears have been known to venture into back yards to take a dip.
