New Bern declares war on poverty

Posted: Updated:
NEW BERN, N.C. - New Bern community leaders and residents are working to end a war going on longer than Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq combined.

President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a war on poverty 50 years ago.

However, communities in the east are still feeling the effects of that war.

Community leaders point to New Bern's Craven Terrace where they say the median income is $8400 a year.

"We have to go down to the community, and we can't go one time," Mayor Dana Outlaw said. "We gotta go bunches of time."

Leaders agreed to reconvene in 90 days to check on their progress in ending poverty in the east.
