Tybee Nude Beach? Online Petition Aims To Bare All

Posted: Updated:
TYBEE ISLAND, GA - A local man is fighting for the right to bare all.  He wants to create a section of Tybee Beach where people can go fully nude if they want to, no strings or straps, attached.

Savannah man Shawn Williams started that petition online to make a .25 mile section of the two mile beach "clothing optional".  Williams says it's not sexual, but a celebration of nature.  Still others say it's vulgar and they don't want their kids subjected to that at all.

"I mean, it's a natural thing to be nude.  You come out (of the womb) nude," said Maranda Stevaly, beach goer.

"There are too many kids that come out here. We have to keep this family oriented," said Kyle Barfield, beach goer.

City Hall would need to approve it.  We asked Tybee City Councilman Paul Wolff what he thought.  He says City Hall calls the petition "comedic relief".  "That’s mainly because we market ourselves as a family oriented destination.  I think from a public relations stand point, we would have more to lose by having a nude beach on Tybee, than we would have to gain."

The petition is on the website Change.org.  The author, Shawn Williams, is asking for 500 signatures.  As of 11:30 pm Thursday night he had 450.  But the votes the petition receives don't have any real power.  Just reaching 500 doesn't force Tybee city leaders to do anything.  And they tell News 3 that they won't do anything.

The petition points out on European beaches some nudity is normal.

Beach goer Chauncey Phillips says, "I actually just got back from a trip to Europe and I went to some nude beaches (there).  So, I don't see why not."

But beach goer Teresa Stevens says, "I say what they do over there, let’s keep it over there."

Councilman Wolff says if there were to be an official clothing optional beach, it would likely be on the north side of the island.
