NC Medicaid data hard to come by for budget

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina budget negotiations are delayed because lawmakers and Gov. Pat McCrory's administration are still updating how much money they'll need for Medicaid next year.

Fiscal researchers for the legislature and state budget director Art Pope said Thursday they've had a hard time collecting detailed enrollment and spending information from the state Medicaid agency.

Pope attributes the trouble to a surge in Medicaid enrollment through the federal health care law. He also says two new computer programs within the Department of Health and Human Services offer partial Medicaid use data this year.

Pope says he's keeping lawmakers informed as they create an updated forecast soon.

The House and Senate budgets are about $250 million apart on how much more Medicaid money is required through mid-2015.
