Husband shot, killed by Hope Mills Police after stabbing wife

Posted: Updated:
HOPE MILLS, N.C. -

Two Hope Mills police officers shot and killed a man Thursday morning after he threatened his wife with a knife at the PNC Bank on Hope Mills Road.

Officers Kristen Thompson and Brad Dean responded to a report of an assault at the bank, located at 2495 Hope Mills Road, around 10:13 a.m. Thursday.

The officers saw Darrell Haymon, 53, holding Lorrie Haymon, 51, against her will. Hope Mills Police said in a news release that the wife was bloody and appeared to have wounds to her chest and other parts of her body.

Darrell Haymon had a knife and was trying to stab her, police said.

Thompson and Dean drew their weapons, ordered Darrell Haymon to drop the knife and release her, but he refused. The Hope Mills Police said Haymon raised the knife as if he were going to stab her again, and the officers opened fire.

Darrell Haymon died at the scene.

Lorrie Haymon was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital for treatment. Her condition was not listed Thursday afternoon.

Darrell Haymon's brother in New Jersey said via phone that the couple moved from New Jersey to North Carolina about 3 weeks ago for "a fresh start." He said he spoke on the phone with Lorrie Haymon in the hospital. He said she expected to be released on Friday.

Police do not know of a motive for the assault.

Dean, who has been with the department since 2010, and Thompson, with the department since 2012, will be assigned administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
