Sand Gnats Clinch Playoff Berth

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA - There will be playoff baseball to look forward to later this summer for the Savannah Sand Gnats.  The Gnats managed to clinch the first half division title of the Southern Athletic League's Southern Division Wednesday night despite not even taking the field.  Savannah's game at Kannapolis was rained out giving them the division.  Second place Asheville needed a Savannah loss to keep their hopes alive.

The Gnats (42-20) have sported the best record in the Southern Division since taking the lead back in April.  It's the fourth time since becoming a New York Mets affiliate in 2007 that Savannah has won the first half title.  Last season they went on to defeat Hagerstown for the league title.

With their ticket punched, the Sand Gnats will face the eventual second-half southern division champions in a best-of-three series beginning on Wednesday, September 3. If the Gnats defeat their divisional opponent, they will then have the opportunity to take on the Northern Division’s winner in a best-of-five championship series.

The Sand Gnats return to Historic Grayson Thursday for a doubleheader against Augusta.  First pitch is set for 5:35pm.
