Phenix City school board hires new superintendent

Posted: Updated:
The Phenix City school board has voted to hire Randy Wilkes as the district's new superintendent.

Wilkes currently serves as superintendent in Crenshaw County, Ala. The Alabama Board of Education recommended him along with other names after Phenix City school board members failed to find a candidate on their own.

School board president Brad Baker tells News 3 Wilkes reminded the board members of Dr. Rod Hinton, the interim superintendent. Baker says they were looking for someone with the same kind of vision as Hinton.

At Tuesday's work session, board members Baker, Kelvin Redd, Rick Carpenter, Fran Ellis and Paul Stamp voted to hire Wilkes. Two other board members abstained because they had not met Wilkes yet.

Wilkes's base salary will be $145,000. He starts July 1.

Former superintendent Larry DiChiara is still engaged in a lawsuit with the district for the salary and benefits left on his contract when he was ousted in November.
