Possibly rabid bat found in Fayetteville neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Cumberland County officials are cautioning residents of the Hillendale and Warrenwood neighborhoods after a half-eaten, possibly rabid bat was picked up in the area.

Animal Control picked up the dead bat Monday from Ashfield Drive off of Magellan Drive in Fayetteville. The bat had been partially eaten and was found in an area where stray cats are known to be a problem.

While a rabies test by the State Public Health lab returned with an "unsatisfactory result," the county is treating the bat as its seventh case since Jan. 1.

The county says the first sign of rabies in animals is a change in behavior. Animals may become aggressive, attacking for no reason, or they may become very quiet.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal:

  • Immediately wash the wound under running water for at least 10 minutes with lots of soap.
  • Seek medical attention/advice.
  • Call Animal Control at (910) 321-6852 Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Call the Sheriff's Office at (910) 323-1500 after 5 p.m., weekends and holidays.
  • Go to the emergency room.

The county is also reminding pet owners that state law requires that all dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies.
