FORT BRAGG, N.C. -

A Fort Bragg soldier collapsed and died over the weekend while he was running near his hometown in South Carolina.

Spc. Vince E. Gaillard Jr., 23, of Cross, S.C., was on leave in St. Stephen, S.C., when he collapsed Saturday morning while running. Fort Bragg said the cause of Gaillard death is still under medical investigation.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends affected by this loss," said Capt. Seth Green, commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd General Support Aviation Battalion, 82nd CAB, 82nd Abn. Div. "Spc. Vince Gaillard was a dedicated Soldier who was committed one hundred percent to his job and the Soldiers around him. The news of his passing is a great loss to our team."

Gaillard enlisted in the U.S. Army on Nov. 8, 2010 as an Aviation Operations Specialist. He deployed to Afghanistan from May 2012 to February 2013 while assigned to the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade.
