Child Killed in Fatal Accident on Highway 17 and Jabez Jones

Posted: Updated:
EFFINGHAM COUNTY, GA - The Effingham County Sheriff's Office says a 4-year-old child has been killed in a head on crash on Highway 17.

The sheriff's office says they received a call of a reckless driver shortly before 3pm Friday; then as they were leaving to investigate the caller called back and said the reckless driver, driving a Jeep, had hit another car head on. The jeep was driving south on Highway 17 and crossed over the double yellow lines.
The driver of the jeep was airlifted to Memorial with life threatening injuries. Officials say a younger woman in the other car was taken to Memorial by ambulance. The 4-year-old was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The ECSO says alcohol was found on the scene but it has not yet been determined if it was a factor in the crash.
The sheriff's office reopened Highway 17 at about 5:30 Friday afternoon. The crash is still under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol's Special Collision Reconstruction Team.
