COLUMBUS, Ga. - 47-year-old Jerry Wayne Merrit pleaded not guilty to three charges, including murder Monday afternoon.

Police say Meritt went to the Pure Gas Station at the corner of Fort Benning Road and Trask Drive Friday morning and shot 44-year-old Anthony Wayne Taylor, Sr. in the back. Authorities say Taylor died at Midtown Medical Center following the shooting.

Merrit was arrested at the crime scene Friday morning after he surrendered to police in front of news cameras.

Detectives told a judge Monday that Merrit had a history of arguments. Merrit told authorities that the victim, Anthony Taylor, hit him in the head with a pipe early Friday morning before the shooting.

It's no secret that alligators sometimes make their way into pools here in Florida. But, in sunny California, bears have been known to venture into back yards to take a dip.
