Welch was the head coach at Memorial Day School from 2006-2007 mentoring Michael Thompson.  The two flip-flopped positions in 2008.  Welch remained instrumental in the Blue Thunder's success for nine seasons, winning three state championships.  Welch also helped the basketball win two state titles.

Dennis Knight of the Savannah Morning News reports that former Windsor Forest head coach Mike Martin will be the next football coach at Groves High School. Martin led the Knights to the playoffs four times over his five seasons as head coach.  He stepped down in 2009.  According the Georgia High School Historians Association, Martin had a record of 29-25 overall.
