Hundreds May Now Get SC Diplomas

Posted: Updated:
BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. - It just got a little easier for students in South Carolina to get their high school diplomas.

"Since 1990 students in South Carolina have had to pass credit hours as well as an exit exam. The General assembly decided this year that the exit exam is no longer going to be a requirement," said district spokesperson, Jim Foster.

That could mean that hundreds of former Beaufort County students may finally get their degrees.

"Any student who had the required number of courses but had not passed the exit exams, those students may noW petition their local school board for that diploma."

The district estimates that this year between 30-40 seniors could fall into that category--multiply that by more than two decades and that could be several hundreds of appeals.

"We are not sure how many former students could be effected some of them may have gone on to get their G-E-Ds, or their diplomas through adult education courses. But we really wont know until July 1 when you can start petitioning the board."

Foster says the cost of this change may not just be in the printing of diplomas.

"The cost of printing the diplomas is marginal, that by itself is not a big deal. what could take a lot of time is hearing and processing all of these appeals."
