SC pregnant mother accused of driving van into ocean, free on bond

Posted: Updated:
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - A mother charged with trying to kill her three children by driving them into the Atlantic Ocean in a minivan is out of jail as of Friday.

Ebony Wilkerson, 32, gave birth to her fourth child May 19. That baby is now in the custody of the father. The other three children are in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. Conditions of Wilkerson's release include seeing a psychiatrist and no contact with her children. She also must stay in Volusia County, where she was arrested.

A psychiatrist testified at her bond hearing that Wilkerson is no longer hearing voices or having hallucinations. Her bond was reduced from $1.2 million to $90,000. A psychiatrist said Wilkerson recognized she has a mental illness.

She made news in March, when witnesses filmed Wilkerson's van off the surf of Daytona Beach. The van was submerged and bystanders and officers were able to pull her and her children - ages 3, 9 and 10 - all to safety.

The court affidavit indicated that one of her children told detectives "Mom tried to kill us." She's charged with three counts of attempted murder and child abuse.
