Muscogee County schools lay off at least 31 teachers

Posted: Updated:

At least 31 teachers will not be returning to the Muscogee County School District next year, District Spokeswoman Valerie Fuller confirms. Fuller says at this time those 31 employees have not been offered a teaching contract for the 2014-2015 school year.

Fuller says those cuts are based on a reduction of budgeted positions related to the high school and middle school scheduling changes, and there may be more cuts coming. Fuller says it's a continuous process as the district continues to review acceptance of contracts along with retirements and resignations.

“It is absolutely critical and important to convey the whole picture to the public that this is a continuous process, especially this time of year with contracts,” Fuller said in an e-mailed statement Friday afternoon. “Non-renewals could be based on non-performance, lack of demand for courses, failure to meet certification requirements, as well as budgetary considerations, and projected student enrollment. It’s not as easy as stating a number. We will be able to provide more definitive numbers related to these categories when we present the preliminary budget for the board’s review in June. Until that time, it is strictly preliminary as the information changes daily due to transfers, resignations, and retirements.”

Employees must respond to contracts by May 29th.
