Quickest route into NFL draft goes through SEC

The Southeastern Conference has become the most popular jumping-off point for underclassmen looking for a head start on NFL careers. The trend creates more spots to fill around the league with preseason camps approaching, but also helps entice blue-chip prospects to play in the SEC. No league has had nearly as many players leaving early to pursue NFL careers over the past eight years, and LSU has had the most of any program two years running. Knoxville, Tn - Willie Carmichael, a 6-8, 210-pound forward from Apopka, Fla., has signed official paperwork to attend Tennessee and join the men's basketball program, head coach Donnie Tyndall announced Wednesday.

Carmichael will be a freshman next season with four years of collegiate eligibility.

He had previously signed to play for Tyndall at Southern Miss but was granted a release after the coaching transition that brought Tyndall to Tennessee.

“Willie Carmichael is my type of frontline guy,” Tyndall said. “He’s tough, athletic and hard-playing. As he gets stronger, he will have a greater and greater impact on our team – both defensively and as a rebounder.”

Carmichael attends Wekiva High School in Apopka, where he was coached by Scott Williams. Carmichael was rated as the 25th-ranked prospect in the state of Florida by FloridaHoops.com.

This past season, Carmichael helped power Wekiva to a 25-5 record, a District 4 second-place finish and the Florida Class 7A regional semifinals. The Orlando Sentinel named him the 7A State Player of the Year.

As a junior in 2012-13, he averaged 11.2 points and 6.9 rebounds while recording six double-doubles and leading the Mustangs to the Florida Class 8A quarterfinals. He averaged 4.8 points and 4.6 rebounds as a sophomore in 2011-12.

He played AAU ball for the Florida Tarheels Elite program.

Carmichael is the fifth member of a UT signing class that includes Devon Baulkman, Jabari McGhee, Detrick Mostella and Kevin Punter.
