Knoxville, Tn - Tennessee basketball coach Donnie Tyndall announced Wednesday that graduate transfer Ian Chiles has signed an institutional aid agreement to transfer to UT and play for the Volunteers next season.

A 6-1, 200-pound guard from Louisville, Ky., Chiles recently graduated from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He plans to enroll at UT this summer and take graduate-level courses. He will have one year of eligibility.

As a junior last season, Chiles led IUPUI in scoring (15.8 ppg; third in the Summit League) and minutes played (33.1 mpg) while also averaging 3.2 rebounds. He started 22 of the 25 games in which he appeared, shooting .419 from the field and .314 from 3-point range.

“Ian brings a strong, physical and experienced lead guard to our team,” Tyndall said. “He’s a guy who can create for himself off the dribble and also get to the paint and make his teammates better as a playmaker.

“With his experience at the Division I level, he’ll have an opportunity to come in and provide leadership from Day One.”

In 61 career games played at the Division I level, Chiles has scored in double figures 41 times, and he has scored at least 20 points 10 times. He scored a career-high 28 points vs. Evansville Nov. 12, 2013.

Chiles was a prep standout at Ballard High School in Louisville (same high school that produced Tennessee and NBA legend Allan Houston) and attended Wabash Valley College in Mount Carmel, Ill., as a freshman in 2010-11.

He then transferred to IUPUI, where he made the five-man Summit League All-Newcomer Team as a sophomore in 2011-12.

Chiles was a preseason All-Summit League selection prior to the 2012-13 campaign, but an injury forced him to redshirt that season. He returned to action in time to average a team-best 15.5 point per game during IUPUI’s exhibition trip to Italy in the summer of 2013.

His older sister, India Chiles, was an All-American outfielder for the Tennessee softball program, lettering from 2004-07. India Chiles also earned Academic All-America distinction during her time as a Lady Vol.

Ian’s older brother, Adam Chiles, lettered in basketball as a guard at Murray State from 2002-05. Adam was a three-year teammate of current Tennessee assistant coach Chris Shumate at Murray State.

Other recent graduate transfers to enjoy one season of hardwood success at Tennessee include John Fields (2011) and Antonio Barton (2014).

Tennessee’s 2014 signing class is now six student-athletes deep: Chiles, Devon Baulkman, Willie Carmichael, Jabari McGhee, Detrick Mostella and Kevin Punter.
