CITRUS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) - An armed man forced his way into a home with two children inside and got into a gun fight with Citrus County Sheriff's deputies late Tuesday night in Citrus Springs.  Deputies shot the man dead, after they say he fired his weapon at them.

The suspect is identified as David James Barclay, 41 of Dunnellon. He went to his estranged wife's house on N. Clayton Ave. and demanded to see their son Tuesday night.

While he was talking to his wife, her roommate managed to crawl out of the window with her young daughter and ran to a neighbor’s house to call 911.

“She was terrified,” said neighbor James Lynch.  “We didn’t know if her roommate had been shot or what.”

When deputies arrived, they learned Barclay was still inside the home with a gun.  His estranged wife Amanda Barclay, 34, and their 3 year-old son were also inside.

Deputies called in the SWAT team.  Soon after, Barclay walked outside and fired at deputies, according to Citrus County Sheriff’s Spokeswoman Heather Yates.  Four deputies shot back.  The suspect died at the scene.  No one else was injured.

Barclay's autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.  Per standard procedures, all four deputies involved in the shoot-out are placed on the administrative leave and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will continue this investigation.

Amanda Barclay filed an injunction against her husband for protection from domestic violence last year.  According to Citrus County Jail records, Barclay was arrested for violating that injunction in November.  At the time, he was also charged with possession of a firearm.

Amanda Barclay is Lecanto High School’s 2013 Teacher of the Year.
